Davian let out a large breath. Finally, things have been settled between Papillon and himself. He wouldn't say quite yet that they were friends, but he could feel a connection to her.
"Agreed. My team is roughing it at our old base tonight, but I could probably spare a few gold pieces for a night at the inn for you."
Davian stood and looked into Papillon's eyes one last time before the sun set. He reached down to his belt and withdrew Papillon's rapier and handed it back to her. "I guess we should go..."
He was just about to turn to leave when something along the darkening horizon caught his eye. Davian motioned to the faint purple light. "Do you see that?"

Papillon took back her rapier, and attached it to her belt. "Thank you for your offer", she responded politely, and then reached down to her belt to grab a pouch that clinked when she touched it. Placing it in front of Davian, a small smile on her face, she continued, "but I already have enough to pay for the night myself."
As he motioned at the horizon, Papillon turned to look, putting the pouch back in its place. There was, in fact, something in the distance; something dark... approaching rather rapidly.
"Yes... I do see that..."

Davian couldn't quite place what it was he was seeing. It appeared to be a faint purple, but with the setting sun, he couldn't be sure. It was far off in the distance, in Solaris. From their position, Davian estimated it was around the region of the Castle. The more Davian watched it, the closer it appeared to be.
"It think it's moving."
This thin beam of dark violet light stopped eventually. Davian was facing west. This beam was northwest of them, running west to east spanning most of that thin area of Solaris.
"What do you think...?"
Just as Davian spoke these words, the beam exploded with light. The dark purple turned to a bright shade mixed with gray, red, white, and black. Davian shielded his eyes, but as the brightness dampened, he looked upon it again.
What he then saw changed everything.
Literally.
The beam, high as the sky, swept southward across Solaris. In it's wake, the land changed. Plains became ragged and turned the color of ash. Rounded hills turned into spiked peaks. Calm rivers went rampant, flooding the ashen landscape. Lakes were converted into bubbling pits of muck. Davian watched a town in the distance as this wave swept by. When the wave passed the small village, it was gone. Rubble and smoke were all that remained.
Forests turned to stone.
Valleys deepened into ravines with no escape.
Roads overturned and littered the kingdom with scraps of rock, dirt, and tar.
Solaris was corrupted.
"...what could have done this?"

Papillon simply watched as a strange light moved eastward. She watched, perplexed, confused as to what that was. She had to cover her eyes when this beam exploded. When it died down, the young woman let down her arms to see what happened, only to find horror.
"This is..."
Papillon couldn't finish her sentence. She couldn't believe what she was seeing. Everything was dead. Everything was ruined.
"... Darkness."
She gaped, mortified. The land she once knew was completely disintegrated in just a few seconds. Everything... at this moment, Papillon snapped out.
"Wait... Midland! We must go see if something happened to it!"

"Darkness..."
Nothing could be more accurate. Papillon's answer was backed up by the light haze forming in the sky below the clouds, blocking out the sun almost entirely.
When Papillon mentioned Midland, Davian turned in a panic. His panic quickly dissipated though. Midland was unchanged. He didn't have an answer at the moment, but he didn't even have an answer for what happened to Solaris. Midland however, for the time, was safe. As was the area around Midland. An area of about five miles around the Solaris half of Midland was unchanged and Davian assumed the Tenmau have was unaffected.
The guards were in a panic as were many civilians of Midland, despite being safe from the darkness. Davian collected himself back into his role of mercenary captain.
"Papillon...we should return to town. We know nothing about what's happened and a good night's sleep is the best course of action I believe. I...I can't shake the feeling that this might have something to do with what I saw back at the Castle. But, we're powerless without information. I'll meet back with my team, you head off to the inn, and we'll meet in the morning. By then, I'll try to convince my friends to allow you in. I'm confident they'll trust my word."
