Yuri Playhouse Episode 2
The Seven Sisters
Chapter 1
The Subaru FA20 flat four cylinder boxer engine represents a departure from the EJ series Subaru had come to depend on as its mainstay workhorse across its product line. First introduced with the BRZ and sister car the Toyota FR-S, the FA20D relies on high compression to make a respectable 200 to 205 horsepower and a bit over 150 pound feet of torque, mated to an AZ6-based Aisin transmission shared by the likes of other driver’s cars such as the Nissan Silvia and the Mazda Miata and RX-8. The FA20D borrows Toyota’s D-4S injection system which features both port and direct fuel injection, dynamically switching between the two as necessary to gain the efficiency and cooling benefits of direct injection while maintaining responsiveness and torque in higher RPM’s with port injection. This system also avoids the soot and carbon buildup problems inherent to direct injection by being able to run blends of both injectors. The FA20D uses a perfectly square setup with its 86 mm bore and stroke as a throwback to the legendary Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86 of which the BRZ and FR-S take inspiration from. Its 2.0 litre displacement strikes a good balance of light weight and acceptable power output for its application while the flat boxer layout Subaru is known for allows for a lower centre of gravity when mounted compared to traditional inline or V designs. While this output has drawn criticism for being lackluster for the vehicles it’s used in, the aftermarket community has embraced it extensively with a plethora of forced induction options as it takes very well to turbocharging and supercharging, something you would expect of a Subaru engine.
