I'm just finishing the third book, Mockingjay. Haven't seen the film though.

Read the first book, saw the movie this weekend and loved it.
It's a great adaption of the book. They did a real good job.

The book was mediocre.

The last book of the three... It's awful -- the author screwed up badly.

And I just saw the movie today!
I didn't... really like it very much. o.o

Just out of curiosity, why? I haven't seen it yet, but pretty much everyone I've spoken to loves the movie.

Oh no, I'm so bad at explaining these things. x.x
Well, for one I felt like it was kind of rushed, especially parts in the arena. I mean, I could tell it must have been difficult to find a balance between making it rushed and not making it boring. But for the most part I felt like the movie was just trying to get through the events in the book and then be done. It seemed kind of... tedious, maybe, to me at least. Maybe because I read the book and had expectations? To me the book made everything seem much more intense and passionate, whereas the move was just like going through the motions and events.
Also I noted to my sister literally five minutes ago that the only way the movie gives us feeling is by making characters scream or cry, for the most part. There were some parts that had emotional impact on me. But I don't think the movie hit on all the right parts. I thought the movie did well with scenes involving Prim and Rue, then the rest felt kind of neglected. Dynamics with Peeta seemed dull. The actual friendship between Katniss and Rue seemed short and insignificant almost (unless the characters were screaming or crying). I do think they did alright with Haymitch though. But then I felt like the climax was really a let down too. All the little climaxes in the plot tended to... flatten a little. Excitement and anticipation weren't things I felt, which I like most when I'm watching movies like The Hunger Games.
I feel like I'm explaining this all wrong maybe. I know that cinema and literature are very different ways of expression, and some of the things I mentioned can't be expressed so well by films. So I understand that the movie can't be like the book in some ways. But still, I generally got the feeling that whoever made the move was like "Okay, let's just get through all this."
Um... Yeah, so again, I'm bad at explaining these things. Maybe someone here who liked it should try to explain why they liked it too?

I do agree with shadowdeath though, that in terms of adapting from the book it did pretty well. Does that sound like I'm contradicting myself a lot?

No, no. The movie definitely did all those things you mentioned, but you also have to remember that it wasn't exactly a short movie. It was 2 and a half hours long. I still say, if Titanic could be 4 hours, Hunger Games should have been 4 hours too, but that's beside the point...
If they didn't do as much of the boom as they could, they'd be "leaving out all the best parts." So in doing as much of the book as possible, they still "left out all the best parts."
Whether you feel the events in the movie didn't justify characters reactions, you have to admit that the progression of events was so sharp and interesting that there was no low point.

Yeah I kinda agree with some of the comments that the book wasn't that great. I wouldn't say it's mediocre, but it's getting way more recognition than it deserves. The writing in the book isn't that stellar, but the plot is pretty interesting. (Although I think it's not a completely unique mind blowing plot)
KM8: I actually thought the Prim and Rue part sucked. I was absolutely devastated when that happened in the book, and I was excepting to feel the same during the movie. Except I didn't.
Anyway the movie is an adaption of a book, and I thought they did a great job by adding extra things. So when you have Haymitch going around asking for Sponsors, they never explicitly mentioned that in the book, but it was great how they had it in the movie. Also how they explained trackerjackers, and the mines surrounding the food was explained well with the "commentary".

I agree with how the way they added certain things to explain it all was spot on.
