I don't like that rule.

Rule: A character must have something important stolen from them by something that is not human.

here are a few quick loopholes for you because I feel bad for you guys.

-you can clearly define if it is or is not a dream through narration or through the conversations of other characters, etc. the only exception is that the protagonist cannot know as he/she wakes up.

example:

Titus roused from his slumber.
"Was I reading a book in a library that was attacked by a freight train yesterday, or was it all a dream?"
It was not a dream.
Reginald and Lu were having a private conversation across town.
"Hey Lu, do you remember when Titus was reading a book in a library and was attacked by a train yesterday?"

-the rule states that the protagonist must question whether it was or was not a dream when they wake up. this means that the protagonist need only believe this at the instantaneous moment they awake, and can figure out if it was or was not a dream almost immediately, by shaking off a typical morning daze, finding evidence of what had occurred, or having another character outright tell them what happened.

example:

Amelia woke on top of the full dinosaur skeleton in a museum. She had somehow managed to have sex with it and fell asleep on top of it the night prior.
Amelia struggled to open her eyes and face the morning sunlight, as she was severely hungover.
"Did I drive a freight train through a library last night, or was that all a dream?"
She yawned.
"No, wait, that would be stupid. Of course it wasn't a dream."
Amelia inhaled and found an industrial odor in the air, as one would find in a factory. She looked around and to her surprise discovered that the only thing that prevented her from waking up completely naked was the fact the she was wearing about 8-12 loose pages from books (although they didn't cover anything relevant) and also some motor oil from a train which mildly adhered the pages to her skin.
Titus walked into the museum and shouted upwards at the brachiosaurus fossil.
"Hey Amelia, do you remember when you drove that freight train through a library last night?"
