The only noise as she walked down the cobble stone side walk besides the sounds of her own footsteps of course was that of a leaf, scurrying on ground like a mouse, led by no will of it’s own. It was a light breeze, the first sign of fall in the failing summer heat. She wasn’t alone of course, there were other people walking up and down the side walk, heading off in their own little worlds. She was just so wrapped in her own thoughts that the other people became invisible. This was understandable, one supposes, for there were so many thoughts to run through head. And then the blanket of thought was ripped to shred's by a voice behind her. “Hey there pretty lady” It was then that she realized that she should have turned right 7 blocks ago. Because of this she led herself into one of the not so nice parts of town. Afraid to turn around, her pace broke into a run. The voice followed her. The footsteps that belonged to the voice were heavy, quite obviously emerging from work boots. As she ran her eyes darted looking for a place to seek shelter. Most of the shops had bars behind the door. “Why does everything close so early” Finally she saw an open store front. The light from it’s open sign beamed into her eyes like a that from a light house to a lost ship. Kalvin’s Spritual and Occult Shop said the sign. She didn’t care if it were a Kondom Kingdom at this point, she just wanted to get away from the voice.

This is an interesting opening, and it has lovely details, so I hope some of the questions that this story proposes are answered in later chapters.

“LOOK AT ME, YOU FUCKING BITCH!” She panicked. Why did she volunteer for this? Undercover for the FBI? As the girlfriend to a mobster? This was her sisters job.
“Mariane” said a voice in her ear “Don’t let him figure it out. Lilian is on her way with a squad.”
“ARE YOU A FUCKING SPY? You’ve got to be. The place has been bugged, the phone lines tapped. They’ve got pictures of me where ever we’ve been together. You’re working for the police. AREN’T YOU?”
She knew it was the right thing. “This fucker had to be brought down. He was the dealer that supplied the drugs that caused my cousin to overdose.”
This was what had been her justification for getting herself into this situation. But she knew it wasn’t real reason. She was always a puppet, always doing things for other people. She could never stick up for herself. That’s how she got into this the first time. That abusive relationship. And than Lilian, her sister, saved her. She arrested the fucker and put him in prison. Suddenly this request didn’t make sense to her. To pay you back for saving me from abusive boyfriend, you want to me date another abusive man? And a mobster no less. Just so you can get the high of catching the bad guy. Big Sis was always the adrenaline junky. She wasn’t a cop, a member of the FBI know less, to catch the bad guy, do the right thing. She loved the the thrill of the chase, and a cop was just side with more to gain than the criminal.
The door slammed open. A squad of men in blue all hopped in in good form and pointed there guns at the bad guy. And of course, there stood Lillian, the great heroine, there to save the day. “I’ll get you for this, you bitch. I’ll gut you like a pig” His voice rang through her head. It would haunt her forever. Then it would come back to her one day. One windy day, as she walked down a cobble stone sidewalk...
