Beyond All Boundaries
Chapter 1: The Fall
Chapter 1: The Fall
It was a chilly night... Much colder than I had anticipated. Even though I was wearing thick, warm clothes underneath my coat, I was still shivering. I tried distracting myself by looking at the river that stretched out in front of me. Somehow the river seemed bigger and wider when viewed from a bridge than from the side. But that wasn't the only reason why I liked observing it from a bridge; the cars, buildings, lights... everything was reflected on its surface. It was as though a parallel version of the city was inside it.
I gazed upon the water. The full moon reflected beautifully, shimmering and quivering. For a river, it was a rather calm one. Not that I had ever heard of raging rivers that pass through a city. I wasn't an expert anyway, and that was not my reason for being here today.
I looked down at the river from the bridge I was standing on, and gulped; it might be a calm river, but it was deep. And the bridge was high, very high. I couldn't make any estimation (I suck at that), but if it were dry land and someone jumped from here, they'd most likely be dead (or, if they were lucky enough to survive, end up with every bone in their body broken). My heart began racing... was I really sure about this? Was this what I wanted?
I took my eyes off the river and looked around me. The streets were nearly empty; there were scarcely any car passing by, and even less pedestrians. My watch indicated exactly midnight. I guess it was only natural that there wouldn't be anyone at this time of the night, especially not in a street where there weren't any café open at this hour.
I gazed back at the river in front of me. My heart started beating fast again, but this time I was slightly more determined. My hands reached for the buttons on my coat, slowly undoing one by one, till they were all undone, my coat dropping on the floor. I was shaking madly now, but I couldn't know if it was the cold or the fear that did so. I bent down to unzip my boots, and despite my hands shaking insanely much, I managed to do so, my feet slipping out of them and touching the frozen ground. I stood up, and grabbed onto the border. Then slowly, very slowly, I climbed onto it, to stand on it.
Looking down on the river again, I stared at it, questioning myself for the last time; was I sure about this? Did I really want to do this? Was there nothing to hold me back?
I waited, seconds, minutes, who knows how long. I waited for any change, any sign, anyone, to make me back down. Once I take the decision, I would not go back on it, even if something tried to stop me afterwards.
Did a part of me still want to go on?
Was there someone who would stop me, who would want me to live on?
Was there anything at all to hold me back?
No.
No...
... No.
That was it. I was sure more than ever, and I was determined more than ever. Nothing could hold me back now.
Just then, I heard a car swerve over to a stop, and someone getting out of it. I hadn't heard the car coming, but it didn't matter now, not anymore.
"What are you doing? You're not going to jump off, are you?"
The voice belonged to a man. I did not dare turn around and see who it was. It was too late, anyway; I had already taken my decision. Nothing could change my mind anymore.
"Miss, please, get back to your senses."
I blocked out his voice. My decision had been made.
"Miss- wait, stop!!!"
Nothing could ever stop me now. No voice to convince me, no wings to save me, nothing. I closed my eyes shut, and took a step forward...
"NO!!!!!"
That was the last thing I heard, as I began falling, a few seconds away from drowning to my death...
