Chapter 1
She woke up, yawning away sleepiness. She opened her eyes and looked around the room as her nose was assaulted with the tantalizing scent of fresh, warm pancakes and syrup. Her eyes squinted in interest and confusion. It was as if this moment seemed familiar.
She shrugged off the strange feeling and slipped the blankets off and swung her legs off the bed. She noticed she was wearing regular clothes, something she would wear to school, not to bed. She wore her favorite jeans, the knees ripped a bit, and she had on her favorite shoes, all black, they looked like sneakers but went up to below her knee. Her shirt she made herself, sentences filled with nonsense covered it in bright blue, pink, and green fabric ink. The shirt was covered by another layer, a vest, which was also black. A scarf and lace finger-less gloves finished the outfit.
She sighed and walked to the door of her room, it was locked. She quickly unlocked it and her legs, as if by habit, guided her down the stairs, taking a quick left, and then through an open doorway, into a large kitchen.
She squinted through the bright light that glinted from above a stove. The smell of pancakes was much stronger than before. A comfy looking chair called to her, but she was hesitant for some reason. A voice spoke to her, but the speaker was nothing but a dark silhouette of a young man. She shocked, but strangely calm for the moment. In her shock of the strange man’s appearance, she had not listened to what the shadow said.
"What did you say?" She asked cautiously. A shiver trickled down her back as the shadow glanced at her.
"Are you hungry?" It said. The question was innocent enough, but she couldn’t help feeling a bit frightened by the shadow.
"Hayley, do you want something to eat or not?" It asked again, the voice filled with a bit of irritation.
“How do you know my name?” Hayley asked backing away from the silhouette, frightened.
“I don’t want to scare you or sound like a stalker, but I know quite a bit about you. Your name is just one of those things. Anyways, have a seat and eat something.”
“Why should I trust you? Who are you? What are you doing in my house?”
The shadow sighed. “Well…you should trust me because I’m here to protect you. By the way, my name is Demitri.”
“Well, Demitri, where are my parents?” Hayley asked as she sat down, still wary of the silhouette.
“I think you should eat before we talk about that…” He said quickly. His shadowy hand pointed to the food that was placed before her.
“No! Wait! Why? What happened to them?” Hayley demanded in a very worried voice.
“I’ll tell you after you’ve eaten your breakfast.” He insisted.
“No! I want to know now!” She yelled at she jumped out of her chair.
“Fine, but I want you to know I’m not allowed to tell you this. You can’t tell anyone I told you this, aright?”
“I promise, Pinky promise.” She said while prompting her pinky to prove it was true.
“Well,” Demitri paused, “…they were killed and that’s why I’m here to protect you. I was able to stop the Zooraph from killing you.”
Hayley slumped back into her sat. She was silent for many minutes, but then quiet sobbing was soon audible. She slowly grew louder. Demitri had no idea what to do. He’s never had to deal with a crying girl before. Especially a crying human girl. Plus, he couldn’t comfort her, because she was already wary and frightened of him, if he tried to help her, he felt it would scare her even more.
....................................................................................................
It was the next day and Demitri sat, cross-legged, in front of Hayley’s bedroom door. She had locked herself in her room about fifteen minutes after she heard the news about her parents. She hasn’t come out since and hasn’t eaten either. Demitri, nonetheless, was worried about her.
They were supposed to leave the house yesterday after breakfast. He would force her out if she didn’t come out soon. Demitri wasn’t one for violence, but when iy came down to it…
“Okay…Hayley, you better come out of there. If you don’t, I’m gonna have to =drag you out.” He threatened.
“Shut up!” Hayley said sharply. “You’ve been saying that for the past hour. You can’t and won’t do it. You’re too soft. What kind of guard are you?”
Demitri let out an irritated and very embarrassed sigh. She was right. Very right. Why did he ever go into this line of work?
“Can you please come out? We’re not safe here.”
Hayley opened the door. And walked out, looking at the shadow named Demitri. “What do you mean we’re not safe?”
“I mean that we have to get out of here. If we stay, we might get killed.” He said, getting to his feet.
Hayley opened her mouth, about to talk, but hesitated and instead, studied Demitri a minute or two. Then she nodded. “Okay, but where are we going?”
“To Blandage!” He said, rather excitedly.
“Where is tha- Whoa!” She began to say when the shadow swept her up in his arms.
Strangely, he felt warm. Hayley thought he would be cold, considering his dark appearance, but apparently not. It was as if he had a protective aura, because once she was swept off her feet, into his arms, she felt very safe. She felt very sure that she could trust this shadowy man.
After a while and quite a bit of scenery change, Hayley decided to ask questions.
“Demitri, am I allowed to ask you questions?”
“Certainly, but I may not be allowed to answer them all.”
“What are you?” She smiled.
Demitri made a sound, as if clearing his throat. “Well, the technical term for what I am is, a Monteneth, but you’re a human, so you would know me as a…” He stopped. This on word always haunted him. Ever since he knew what he was, it hurt him and his manly hood.
“I’m a type of…” He continued, but still managed to choke on the single word.
Hayley looked up at him expectantly.
“Fairy…There! I said it!” He sighed.
“You’re a fairy?” She giggled a bit.
“Yes, I am…And don’t laugh at me!” He was so glad he was cloaked because he was blushing like a red tomato.
“Sorry…” Hayley replied. “How come you’re a shadow?”
“I’m cloaked, from human sight. You’re cloaked too at the moment.”
“Oh…”
There was a long silence from the two, then Demitri spoke. “It looks like we won’t make it there by tonight. We’ll have to stay the night in the woods.”
“Oh! I love camping.” Hayley exclaimed.
“Good.” he placed her on the ground gently. She watched as he darted around making a camp. “Demitri, are you allowed to take your cloaking shadow…thing…off now?”
The shadow paused. “…Um…Yeah, but I’d rather not.”
“Why?” She asked, curious.
“It’s not for you to know.” He replied quickly.
Hayley decided to drop the topic…for now.
The two hunkered down in the very well built shelter. I t was now, that the thoughts of her parent’s flooded Hayley’s mind, causing her to cry again and leaving Demitri, once again, lost in trying to understand a girl’s emotions.
......................................................................................................
Demitri looked at the sleeping teenager in his arms. He wanted to get an early start, but didn’t want to wake Hayley, so he took her sleeping form and left the camp behind. They would make it to Blandage by noon if they kept this rate.
Hayley stirred as Demitri jumped over a cliff.
Demitri’s wing extended and he stole a quick look at her, to see if she was waking. She was not, just moving, as most people do in their sleep. Damn, can she sleep…Are all humans like this? He thought after another glance at her. It not like he cared. Demitri looked her better when she was sleeping. She was easier to carry and kind of cute when she was in this state.
After two hours, they were at his family’s home in Blandage. Hayley was still fast asleep, so he put her in one of the many guest rooms.
Another hour later, Hayley woke up to being in a strange, colorful room that looked nothing like the shelter Demitri had built for them last night. She wasn’t scared though, otherwise, she felt very happy, like she was welcomed here. A great smile overwhelmed her face.
While Hayley was getting up, Demitri was eating breakfast and talking to his sister and teacher.
“Yes, they’re both dead, Killed by those damn Zooraph.” He said in an upset tone.
“This is horrible, they were like second parents to us.” His sister said looking at him, after slumping into her chair.
“Yes, it maybe be a great loss, but at least she is alive. She may have the same powers as her parents and she may be able to carry on their duties.” Said Travens, the man who taught Demitri everything he knows. Travens continued. “You have to protect and watch over her until we can get Yanel here. He’s on his way.”
Demitri’s eyes widened. “Yanel? He’s coming here?”
“Yes…” replied his teacher, taking a sip of his drink.
Demitri’s sister, Siksta, smiled. “I can’t wait to see him! We haven’t seen him on years!”
Demitri smiled, but it was fake. He hated Yanel more than any other man.
She woke up, yawning away sleepiness. She opened her eyes and looked around the room as her nose was assaulted with the tantalizing scent of fresh, warm pancakes and syrup. Her eyes squinted in interest and confusion. It was as if this moment seemed familiar.
