Okay, I originally put this onto facebook. This is something I've just been gradually working on in my free time for fun. Griffin suggested I put it onto the forums, so here's the latest (as of the time of posting) stuff I have:
I have a lot of free time and I was thinking about extraterrestrial life and how people are making it out to be something that is completely against probability. Aliens likely would not be humanoid, or be DNA based since that's likely something we evolved into.
Just for fun's sake I've started doodling and imagining some non-DNA based organisms (mostly plants so far) which make a functioning planet.
I started making a binary solar system based around two stars (Bril' and Malhel'). One of the distant planets is Elysia, a planet which supports life.
In fact, Elysia is practically an organism itself. The planet is run my microscopic bacteria who communicate via radio signals they emit from their bodies. The microscopic bacteria (Elysians) basically talk to every other one on the planet which creates a sort of hive-mind. They act as one.
The organisms spread across the planet and just coat the upper layers of the planet's crust. This makes the upper layers practically breathe and live. Now, since mutations don't exist because there's no DNA to mutate, evolution comes differently in Elysia.
The Elysians, which cover the planet and the plants that grow on the planet, control the spread of the plants and have integrated themselves to 'control' the plants. The Elysians have created certain plants to perform certain tasks around the planet, for example, the Buklo (Esperanto for curl) plants are created to produce large amounts of nutrients in sap form. The sap is called Gel.
The entire ecosystem on Elysia depends on Gel to survive, similar to humans and animals with the basic nutrients. It's a mix of a thick, nutrient dense sap and a viscous lubricant oil. The mixture becomes Gel and is stored inside every plant, mostly inside Bukloj as they are 'Gel banks'.
So far, in my scribbles, I've only covered plants that live in sunny areas, above ground and away from water sources. There's so much potential for creativity, though. Elysia, being a functioning planet would need to tick like clockwork.
Buklo plants. (Buklo means 'curl' in Esperanto)
Bril'(o) means bright and Malhel'(o) means dim or dark in noun form. So one that is bright or dim. Bril' and Malhel' are stars that make up the center of the solar system which Elysia makes home to. The solar system is a binary solar system, meaning it has two suns instead of one.
Ankoroj (Esperanto for anchors) are larger roots that's only purpose is to anchor the bulb into the ground
The Gut is a large pouch which is specifically made for storing Gel, which is the nutrient-rich sap mixture that Elysia runs on.
The Roots are long, thing roots for sucking up nutrients from the ground.
Pofferies are soft, dark growths on the bulb and stem that suck in gases from the air and change them, along chemicals from the ground, to create Gel.
Pajlo (Pie-low) tree (Pajlo is Esperanto for straw)
The tree is grown near water sources and the tentacles (vines, branches, etc.) reach down and touch the water. The tree resembles a mushroom in outer appearance.
The three's main function is to separate water (H2 0) into Hydrogen and Oxygen gas particles. The Pajlo tree sucks up water through the tentacles and it dribbles down the 'throat' into the water gut.
The organ-like structure breaks down the compound into Hydrogen (H) and Oxygen (O2) and the gas pushes upwards into the cap. The cap's top is coated in a thick goo and the gas collects into bubbles around weak spots in the goo. The bubbles eventually build up enough to pop and the gas escapes through that new hole which closes once pressure has decreased enough.
The hydrogen and oxygen will have later use.
The Vermo (Esperanto for worm) is one of the two currently planned animals inhabiting Elysia.
Animals on Elysia only exist to carry Gel to plants from Buklo plants.
The Vermo would be around for short distance and larger quantities of Gel to plants.
Instead of breathing to recieve oxygen, the Vermo has a very flexible gut for water (H2 0) and the gut breaks down the water to create Hydrogen gas and Oxygen gas. Oxygen is pumped through the body to keep the parts functioning. The Hydrogen is spit out into the air as a waste product.
The photo-sensitive organ is similar to an eye, and has to be kept moist. Water fills a tube from the gut to the eye and the tube contracts to squeeze water into the eye. Similar to blinking.
Veins carry oxygen gas and Gel nutrients to the parts of the body requiring them.
The transmitter sends signals from the eye organ to the other radio receiver organ and to every other animal, and Elysian.
The receiver receives the radio signals to know where the other animals are and to connect to the hive-mind sentience. In so, animals are part of the one sentient organism known as Elysia, too.
The Greso plant is a type of terraforming plant. It changes areas that wouldn't normally receive water into well-hydrated areas. Spots that should be deserts become grassland.
It takes Hydrogen and Oxygen formed from animal waste and from Pajlo plants and changes it into water. It's common, like grass and covers the grounds as a sort of communal well in case of drought.
It uses sunlight as energy and has a photo-sensitive organ to face the two suns all throughout the day.
Normal areas receive adequate amounts of water and can cycle on their own.
Areas past mountains, for example, that get little rainfall have Greso plants to create water from gases in the air.
Area B should be a desert, but thanks to the Greso plants becomes a grassland.
A second animal I've been working and reworking.
It's small and transports gel to distant areas by flight. It's aided by an extremely flexible body-structure and is filled with hydrogen to balance out the weight of water and gel and lift it.
The entire body flaps to push itself around and at the bottom of the 'tail' is a needle. It extracts gel and can inject gel in powder form (Powder form because it's concentrated and allows more gel to be transported per trip).
The transmitter and reciever are found in the tail structure.
