. . . and other hard games. (Credit for the title goes to UltraJMan of the Let's Play Forum.)
So I've had this idea floating around in my head for about a month now, but never got a chance to actually put the post up. It's commonly thought that video games have been getting easier, and a cursory examination would lend weight to this belief. This post is here to challenge, and hopefull destroy that belief. Alternatively, we are here to prove that easier games are not necessarily such a bad thing.
So, yeah, pretty self-explanatory. Post hard games/ROMhacks here. The most rapingly, hair-pullingly, curse-inducingly hard games that you know of. There are only three rules:
1: The game has to be playable. A game that is hard because of hordes and hordes of Goddamned Bats is fine. A game that is "hard" because of shoddy controls, or a game that kills you the minute you press Go, is not.
2: The game has to be winnable. Meaning, there can't be any glitches or arbitrary actions that could make the game Unwinnable. It might be rare for someone to finish the game; that's perfectly fine. If the game can't be won, it's not fine at all. As a note; minor, non-game-breaking glitches and software problems are still all right. It's when the game itself has a problem that things get Not Good.
3: ROMs, ROM hacks, and free downloadable games are preferable. I don't think most of us are masochistic enough that we actually want to go out and BUY these games, after all. As an addendum, if you can provide a link to the games, please do. We'd like to give them a try. Leastaways, I wouldn't mind having a crack at them.
So that's it. I guess I'll kick it off with a few of my favorites.
I Wanna Be The Guy: The Movie: The Game - And what better game to start the thread off with than the mother of all impossible indie games herself? Imagine, if you will, a game where every wall, every floor, every ceiling can harm you. A game where God-damned bats are numerous in quantity. A game where you can only have four bullets on the screen at a single time. A game. . . where you die in one hit.
Yes, that is I Wanna Be The Guy in a nutshell. A game where everything, and I mean EVERYTHING has the potential to kill you. This game has the honor of being the absolute hardest game I've ever beaten. In retrospect, it was also a lot of fun, in that rose-tinted-glasses kind of way. Built using Multimedia Fusion, it's not exactly the most stable of games (I had it crash three times in a row in a five minute timespan), but chances are good that if it crashes, you were probably about to die anyway. Despite the minor glitches and crashing issues, though, it's still worth checking out. Contra only wishes it could be this hard.
By the way. . . Play it on Hard. Go no higher than that. In fact, you may want to play on Medium, if you don't mind having a little pink bow in your hair.
The Legend of Zelda: Parallel Worlds - This. . . This is easily the most extensive ROM hack I have ever seen. Seriously, where most hackers stop at changing the tilesets/adding spikes fucking EVERYWHERE, these guys went full steam ahead, changing literally the entire game, minus characters and items. With a new storyline, a COMPLETELY new overworld map, and many, many graphical updates, this is probably the coolest hack I've ever seen. Oh, and they added spikes fucking everywhere, too.
So why is it on here, you ask? Well, on top of being REALLY FUCKING AWESOME, it's also REALLY FUCKING HARD. I've not even made it through the third dungeon, and from the videos I've seen, it only gets worse from there. You will be abusing your emulator's save-state feature. A lot. It's definitely worth it, though, at least in my opinion.
(Note: Kev's opinion should be taken with a MASSIVE grain of salt. Seriously, this psycho forced himself through the Hell that is I Wanna Be The Guy. He obviously has a tenuous hold on sanity as is.)
So, those are my entries. Anyone else got some crazy-hard games to post?
