Wulfi tried to win him over. He was only a child, so how hard could it be? “I won’t tell. That’s a promise,” she whispered to him, winking with a slight smirk. Sterling didn’t buy it. Her face faltered. With a sigh, she held him tighter with her left arm around his torso. “Please?”
Sterling glanced quickly at Lyle, eyes timid, and then proceeded to shift his vision to her. “I’m sorry,” he muttered, eyes falling to the floor. “I can’t.”
The brunette’s troubled eyes peered out into the night again, giving up for now. It was eerily quiet now. The footsteps from outside were gone and there was no music playing in the background, which was unusual for a gas station. They must have stopped to fill up in quite the desolate area. There weren’t even any lights out here, save for a porch light far in the distance and the celestial bodies high above. There must have been a glow from the inside of the building.
“He’s an odd one,” she muttered to herself, dazed. Sterling didn’t bother to look up. There was only one person she could possibly speak ill of in this cell, and indeed, he was an odd one. Any guy who managed a beastly growl and snarled with teeth poised like fangs was quite the strange one. The behavior was rather queer for someone as serious as himself.
“Don’t feel too bad…” said the lad, his voice barely audible. He was drifting away into the arms of slumber. His eyelids were heavy with fatigue and his lips barely moved as he spoke. “You’re not the first to say that…”Chapter 01: Mad Tea Party October 26, 2007
