Matthew smiled nervously at the lady who had given him his key, and then gravitated with a sense of relief toward Carmine. "Hello Carmine. Um..." Matthew paused to check his memo. "My room number is 402."
He hoisted his bag back up again, and grabbed the second bag he'd just been provided with. He considered trying to engage further with Carmine, but feeling a bit unnerved by the small chaos of everyone checking in, decided to just let himself be led to where he needed to be.

Shuffles-Paperberg matched Dorothy's energy and toothy smile with one equally as eager. His face wasn't particularly sincere, but Shuffles wants all the students to feel welcome, so he'll smile as wide as need be. "Howdy to you too! I'll just need your name, please." he grinned with a smile so forced, he looked Satanic - not Satanic, like he looked as if he were Satan, but a smile that tells the message "Yeah, I listen to heavy metal, and I worship Satan, what of it?"
The bearded man nodded towards Dorothy as he then pushed a "goodie" bag towards her person. The bag appeared to have been dropped once, as it looked rather haphazardly assorted...
The sick woman gently flicked a card key to Dorothy, seemingly sicker, and far whiter.
"...Lysha, take 'er to... 117, South Hall..." the poor, diseased looking woman muttered through her slack jaw and shuddering skin.
Without a word, Lysha began her trek to South Hall, Rm 117.
--------- "Magix Academy expects the best from you!" ---------
Carmine led Matthew through a side exit, and walked briskly to the slightly elegant grey brick building directly behind Perch Hall. Hu Hall, named after Magix co-inventor Hanako Hu. The building has 5 floors, all of them grey. The energy this grey building emits can only be described and the blandest, greyest, grey shit building this particular narrator has ever seen. Hot damn, that's some grey ass walls, with the grey tiled floors. Goodness gracious!
Taking rapid little steps, the quirky Resident Adviser stopped at room 402, waiting to go only after making sure that Matthew's cardkey worked in the door.

Dorothy had to jog to keep up with Lysha's pace, which made it difficult to attach her ID to her lanyard. Eventually she gave up and shoved both into her carpet bag, which made an alarmingly creaky noise in protest.
"Wha's South Hall like, miss?" she said to the back of the woman in front of her, staring at the surrounding scenery. "Is it nice? Does it have a tv in it? I heard, what I heard was, that all the rooms in the school got tvs in em. That isn't true, is it? Because golly that would be nice. Bloody Mary -" she had just opened the goodie bag - "there's a LOLLIPOP in here!"

Once Matthew managed to open his door, he turned to thank Carmine, not sure how else to respond to the character. As the RA walked off, Matthew began to survey his room. He took a step inside and let the door close behind him. The dorm was furnished simply enough. He walked over to farthest bunk and with a sigh of relief let his bags fall onto the mattress. He stared at them for a moment, and then set about diligently unpacking. He put the bag he'd just been given off to the side as he unpacked his personal items. Once he'd finished with that, he dumped the flyers, maps, and bag of candy onto his just-made bed. He added the school announcement to the pile, but picked up his personal memo to read it again. Andrew McClary, he said to himself, wondering who Andrew was. He sat down on his bed, next to the maps, and began to file away the papers back into their bag. He took out a piece of candy and began to chew on it as he waited, wondering if he ought to go try to catch a tour.

Lysha was all business and no pleasure. Crossing her eyes at Dorothy's constant barrage of words, she haphazardly answered the questions as quickly as she could. "South Hall is okay. It's a bit of a long trot to classes. As for the TVs, they only have them in the lounge. Saves money, they say." The girl smirked with a "hf!" Lysha didn't intend for the small laugh to be so condescending, but it totally sounded bitchy. After passing a few administration buildings, the entrance to South Hall came within plain sight. Only passing through a few doors, Lysha stopped in front of a dorm room with the number 117, before backing up to leave. She did glance behind her, to make sure that Dorothy could get in. ------ "The Academy wants you to dream big!" ------

Marlene heaved a long sigh. She dragged her feet as she walked, her tired hazel eyes fixing the floor. She had a habit of sleeping very late on Saturdays, and never woke up before 2 in the afternoon on Sundays. Waking up in the morning to move affected her mood negatively. Sundays were sacred to her, after all. Whose stupid idea was it to make move in day happen on a Sunday?
"You should be more excited than this", said the tall man walking with her, his hair as black as hers. He was pulling a blue suitcase behind.
"Urgh, dad", Marlene gruntled, "I didn't get enough sleep."
"Well, you do know you'll be waking up early starting tomorrow."
Marlene simply sighed again. Her father had a habit of waking up early everyday, even during the weekend, for his morning jog. Though he may be thirty years older than she was, he had more energy than she could ever wish to have. It was probably the only thing that made her jealous of him.
"What was your roommate's name again?"
His short memory was certainly not something she was jealous of.
"For the millionth time, dad, it's Janae Washington! I mean, it's not too complicated!"
Her father simply nodded, as it would soon not matter anymore; they were already on the first floor of Perch Hall, and he could see the tables where other students checked in. He would ask Marlene again about her roommate's name on Christmas. They walked over to the desk, he with the suitcase, she with a bag slung over her shoulder. It was enough stuff to last her until Christmas; Marlene didn't change clothes too often, anyway.
"Hello", the father spoke, once reaching the desk, "I'm checking in my daughter, Marlene Williams." He checked the note that was attached to the letter, before looking up again. "She's supposed to be in Room 209, in King Hall."
"I can talk for myself, dad..." Marlene muttered under her breath, rolling her eyes. Her father ignored her, or didn't hear her; it didn't matter which. He always did that, anyway, and Marlene took the habit of doing the same thing, too. But who cared, she was soon free from home, for a while.

taking some comfort in the fact that the keycard lady looks even more of a wreck then he is, Andrew musters up the gall to sign in and grab a keycard. although about to turn around and ask for directions to Hu, his curiosity gets the better of him and he adresses the keycard lady in a sympathetic tone. "hey listen, are you feeling alright? is everything okay?"

Dorothy flung her carpet bag onto the nearest bed, looking around the sparse room with considerable interest; and then flung her camera bag onto the bed too, considerably more carefully.
Her roommate, whose name (according to the rather sleepy recesses of her memory) had a Marsh in it, had apparently already arrived. Her packs were on the bed opposite. Dorothy glanced at them, but lost interest quickly. She wrenched her ratty carpet bag open, sucking on the lollipop with her free hand; and after wrestling with a large quantity of dirty-looking plaid things, pulled out a clear plastic box about the size of a toaster.
The box had large holes shoved viciously through the top, and within the box (amid a rough assortment of leaves, sticks, and dead ants) was a fat and grumpy praying mantis.
Dorothy set the box on the windowsill, squinted at it, then turned to empty her carpet bag further; but it was at this point when her roommate entered through the still-open door.
(unless you don't want her to come yet in which case um scratch that)

Rustling through papers, still completely vulnerable to the disarray of his "system" the sign-in man still managed to properly mark Marlene down. His cheeks filled pleasantly, as he curtly nodded to the family.
Beard-bro proudly hands Marlene's father the bag of school information and "treats". It's unclear why exactly he handed the bag to Mr. Williams, and not Marlene. One would assume it was because Marlene's energy was threatening, and maybe he wasn't a huge fan of younger women, or maybe it was just a force of habit to hand off the bag to the closest person.
------
The ghostly shaded woman squinted towards Andrew, glancing to Marlene and her father. Work was piling up, the line was backing up, she was scheduled to be there all day, and her husband hasn't been working for 2 weeks already. Things have just been so stressful. She genuinely wanted to tell Andrew "I'm fine, hon. Thank you, though!"
What came from her mouth wasn't that heroic and daring line, but a woozy mouthing of the words "...help me..."
She proceeded to collapse onto the table, and slowly roll off her chair, onto the floor.
------
Alisha swore up and down, to the Lord Jesus, to her mother and father, and to whoever asked, that she was not a judgmental person. Usually Alisha wasn't, but when Alisha Marsh entered her dorm room, her immediate impression of Dorothy was not a pretty one.
"Uh... Hi, I'm Alisha. You're my roommate?"
She didn't want to dislike Dorothy, but Dorothy was different. Very different. Plus, it appears as if the room has already gone through a tornado (that contained fashion from the 1990s, and the 2060s). Alisha knew fairly quickly, that she'd be speaking to administration about getting a new roommate.
"Uh, I'm going to the lobby to take the tour with my mom. I guess I'll see you later. Bye..."
------
"The Academy promises to guide the best out of you!"

Colby lugged herself and her comically overstuffed suitcase into Perch Hall, wedging herself and her luggage between a mass of students cluttering the hallway to get to the check-in desk. She seemed to bounce as she spoke, excited by the new environment and the hustle and bustle around her. Quickly tucking an errant lock of short hair behind her ear, she grinned at who she assumed was going to check her in.
"Hi! I'm, uh, Colby Cross. This is where we check in, right?"

"Shit." Suddenly removed from his anxiety, Andrew shoves the flimsy plastic table out from between himself and the woman. While she's still dazed, he pulls out his Cuttlebone™ cell as it dials an ambulance on command. He points the camera in the phone at her head and activates a medical application, which scans the video it receives and immediately displays the words to Andrew, "NO VISIBLE INJURY". He addresses the pale lady. "Do you feel hurt?" Although a sympathetic gesture, the actual information about whether she was actually hurt or not would have been of little use to him; he doesn't actually have much medical training. The phrase was largely a sneaky attempt to get the woman to make eye contact, so that his phone would scan for dilated pupils.

As Marlene's father took the bag from the sign-in man, he was about to ask about the room's location when the sick-looking lady next to beard-bro tumbled over. The father had a concerned look, and was about to move to the woman, when he suddenly felt a tug to his side, and then the bag was snatched from his arms.
"Give me that!" Marlene said, clearly annoyed by the situation more than anything. She couldn't care less about the sick woman. No, she was already bothered that the sign-in bro wasn't paying attention to her, even though she was the one signing in, and not her father, so she wasn't going to have a sick woman who should have stayed at home delay things any further. Turning to the guy who signed her in, she said, "can you please give me my room key and tell me where King Hall is?"
Marlene turned to her father, who still had a concerned look over the well-being of the poor woman who fell over. "Look, dad, if you wanna take care of her, fine, but I'm on my own now, so thanks for everything and I'll see you later."
It was obvious that Marlene just wanted to get rid of her father. Not that she didn't like him, not at all; but he could be a little too overprotective, and that bothered her to no end. While she never showed it to her parents, Marlene was actually happy to be staying at campus instead of home.

The two men at the table turned, shocked at their coworker collapsing. Hectic sirens and emergency vehicles filled the street, while Andrew tried to make contact with the unconscious woman. Chaotic murmurs and nervous conversations filled the air with bitter omens and frightening thoughts. It was almost an invitation for bad news. ------ The Academy will be holding a vigil for the passing of Emilinde Strauss at 7 PM on the campus quad tonight, August 19th.
A grief counselor will be available on the basement floor of the Highcastle Building starting tomorrow, August 20th.
Let us all show our respect for Ms. Strauss.
------ Check ins were delayed, and eventually moved into a different room, and things went a little more poorly than anticipated... After Ms. Strauss died, the Academy thought it best to cancel the campus tours, as the additional manpower would be needed for assisting students to their rooms. August 19th is over, and we can only hope to have a better tomorrow. ------ ((OBJECTIVE: Get to class. And make sure to check your Inbox for your "Personal Experience". "I am a morning person. I am a morning person."
Paige had stayed up almost all night, and her above mantra was the only thing keeping her from going back to bed and forgetting about going to school ever again. Was it nerves about her first day at the Academy, where someone had died the day before, or something else? Either way, the piles of books on her desk and the search history on her computer consisting of anatomy websites and photo galleries of brightly coloured birds, revealed that she hadn't really slept much the night before.
Either way, she managed to get ready, lazily throwing on an Academy sweater (a gift from her parents for getting in), jeans, and fumbling her hair into a bun before waving a quick goodbye to her brother. They shared an apartment, but little else; his idea of furthering his education was studying in a social stimulation game. She was quick to get to her car, a well-maintained 2101 Kia-Mazda.
It was a blessing that she didn't actually have to drive, since technology had advanced enough that the cars did all the driving for their owners, with advanced computers and magnets installed in all roads. She was just really there if there was an emergency. As she threw her back into the bag, she spoke to the computer.
"Um... drive to Mason's house first, then the Academy?"
A processing symbol appeared on her dashboard, followed by a short reply. "Now driven to the home of Mason Delaney. Please remain seated and fasten your seatbelt. Thank you."
Paige watched the road sleepily as the car drove along, and soon she was waiting in front of Mason's house. Her car even beeped twice, something programmed especially for Mason.

Should I?
...
No.
Right?
No.
Okay, just one piece...
No! No. I don't need it.
But I want it.
I deserve it.
One more.
-1 piece of bread from the loaf.
Papa Delaney bought the bread Saturday, and nobody has touched it but Mason. Not a single sandwich has been made. It has only gone to feed Mason's unlikely friendship with bread. This loaf was wheat, and it had a special sweetness to it that could only be described as "Really good wheat bread, really sweet, y'know?" The loaf was already 60% of the way completed.
Mason was adequately prepared for class. He sported his PenPal brand PortScreen, which he "swears he won't play games on", and that he'll "use for studying! Yeah!"
He knew he'd never be able to coax a Kettlefish out of his old man...
Checking himself for a 2nd time, Mason kinda made sure that he didn't look like an ass. Hair was okay, clothes were okay. Nothing needed to be perfect, just passable. I mean, what impressions do you really need to make on your first day of university? What impressions do you ever need to make in academia? Just pass classes, get a job, work, die.
*beep beep*
Paige already? Should I get another piece of... no.
The messy looking fellow crumbled silently from the porch of the modest abode, into Paige's vehicle. He observed her with the utmost sympathy and understanding. Giving a troubled smile, he couldn't help be utter, "Wow Paige, you look conscious. Bravo!"

Paige muttered a response that sounded something like "you have breadcrumbs on your shirt" before pressing a button to let the car know it was okay to continue moving again. She rubbed her eyes a bit, yawning loudly, before repeating herself in a tone that Mason would be able to hear clearly.
"You have some crumbs on your shirt, Mason, and good morning to you as well."
She paused for a moment, thinking to herself. She wondered if she had brought everything she needed. She wondered if the other students would be nice, or rude. She also wondered if her Academy bumper sticker made her look a little too excited.
"Are you excited for class? I am."
Her car pulled up to a set of lights that had just turned red. As the car sat there and waited, she checked her phone quickly.
"Do you know where Highcastle Building is?"

Marlene grabbed her bedside clock and looked at the time after tossing and turning for the 100th time in her bed. 8:06 AM. She sighed, and got up. She silently dressed, brushed up, grabbed her bag and left her room so as to not bother her roommate. Her face was quite a mess; not a surprise considering she barely slept last night. The incident really shook her up, and she felt both shock and shame at what happened.
She checked her phone. Two missed calls from last night. It was her father, who had to leave shortly after the incident. He was probably very worried about her, but Marlene didn't like to talk about touchy subjects with him.
"What a fucked up first day...", she muttered loudly, and began wandering around in campus.
Marlene considered going to see a grief counselor or something, since her classes don't start until 9 AM. But let's face it: she wouldn't talk to her parents about it, so why should she with a stranger? She decided against it, and instead, grabbed her MP3 player from her bag and left campus for a stroll. A little walking with some music would do her some good. Plus she would visit the area.
As she was walking, absentmindedly, thinking over last night's incident, Marlene suddenly looked at the clock on her phone: 8:27 AM. Wow, she hadn't seen the time pass by. Maybe she should go back to campus and get ready for class. She looked around, and suddenly realized she didn't know where she was.
Shit. Shit shit shit. That was a bad idea.
She looked around, looking for someone to ask for directions. A person, a car, anyone...
And right there, at a red light, a car. With a bumper sticker.
The Academy bumper sticker.
Maybe it's my lucky day.
She hurried over to the car and knocked on the window on the driver's side. Perhaps a little bit too hard.
"Hey, are you going to the Academy?" Marlene shouted, so the driver, a girl about her age, could hear her, "I need a ride."

Dorothy got up at 5 in the morning. This is when she always got up, because mornings had the best lighting for film. Ambient and gray. Plus, in the morning, flies were sluggish and wouldn't notice if you snuck up behind them with a pair of old tweezers you found in your sock.
She had caught roughly eight flies by seven o'clock, and had even found a half-dead fishmoth under her mattress, which she had flung to the floor in search of her class books. Her father had been right. You could find plenty of insects in college dorms.
Mr. Tupperwince liked the fishmoth. It was larger than a fly, and it was only mostly dead. This was a big plus.
(Mr. Tupperwince was the praying mantis.)
Only once this was finished, and once Dorothy had found her schoolbooks, her toothbrush, her shoes, and her battered Trublu 2x (so archaic that it still ran on battery power), did she fish out her battered schedule from the candy bag the nice fellows at the front desks had given her. 9AM, it said, which wasn't a problem; Highcastle building, it said, which was. According to the map she'd been given, this was near the center of campus. Quite a walk, as her escort had mentioned yesterday.
Dorothy heaved a sigh and glanced forlornly at the empty bed across the room.
Marsh hadn't come back yet.
She'd returned briefly last night to take her things, but hadn't said anything despite Dorothy's best efforts. Dorothy wasn't sure what was going on. Perhaps Marsh had made a mistake. Wrong room. Well, that was perfectly understandable; it happened to Dorothy all the time. Not today, of course. She was going to get today right.
She flung her dirty laundry onto Marsh's old bed and left the room for Highcastle.
She got there around eight, and found the doors locked. But no, no wandering off. No trespassing either. Good first impressions, her mother always said... So she sat complacently on the brick wall directly in front of the doors, sucking her breakfast lollipop and twiddling with her camera's aperture. There she remained, waiting for the doors to open.

"Excited for class? Excited for class?! Not particularly. It's the same as high school until graduation." Mason heaved.
Adult life was so far away... what happened? Why couldn't people grow up slower, and be cute, happy kids for 15 years? Being an adult sucks.
"Do you know where Highcastle Building is?"
Prepared to reply, Mason briefly mouthed the world "Well" before being slightly caught off guard by the lovely lady asking about the Academy.
Mason gave a visible nod and turned to Paige, gesturing to stop the car before the light turned green. He politely turned back to the stranger, "Yeah, hop in the back. It should be just down the street." He was wary of the strange girl boldly knocking on the glass of the car, but it'd be cruel to leave her if she had twisted her ankle, or if she was lost. He looked towards Paige, discreetly apologizing for inviting a stranger into her car without her permission.

Andrew hadn't slept.
It was 6:30 a.m. and the god's rays peaked through the window taking form in the light reflecting off dust motes in the stale dorm room air. McClary lay in his bed staring at the ceiling, mouth slightly open. Although the bed had been made yesterday, the sheets had rolled back at their corners from all of Andrew's tossing during the night prior.
He turned his head to the side to look at his wristwatch lying sideways on his desk halfway across the room. He had no ulterior form of clock to his name other then his phone.
6:30 a.m. Andrew intended to get up at eight or eight thirty, but he supposed there wasn't much point anymore. His previous attempts at slumber over the past seven hours were completely fruitless, and an hour and a half of sleep wouldn't have made him any less tired. Even with nine or ten hours of sleep, Andrew was always tired.

Andrew stumbled around on campus, and no one was about. He had thrown on the first polo and set of jeans he could find, and as a consequence the frigid early morning air bit at his exposed arms. The cafeteria didn't open on that day until 7:30, and Andrew didn't keep any food in his room. All that he could hope to do was walk around the area and try to find any landmarks to look at. In this time, he contemplated his encounter with his roommate yesterday. The fellow's name was Matt Hale, and he seemed perfectly nice, but after his encounter with the pale woman he had lost all focus for the day. Any conversation attempted by Matt had only been met with light grunts or monosyllabic words.

Matthew woke up sometime around 8:15 am, and was a little surprised to find his roommate had already left. The guy hadn’t seemed too well last night though, and Matthew wondered where he was at now. He considered going to search for Andrew, but realized that it might seem overbearing and creepy. He just hoped Andrew was okay, and then put it out of his mind as he began to methodically get ready for the day.
He arrived at the Highcastle Building five minutes early and found the Sensory Arts classroom. He took a seat toward the back and took out a pen and a notebook, in which he started to doodle as he waited for class to start. His doodle began to take the form of a robot bunny.

At precisely 7:59 am, J.P. opened his eyes and stared at an unfamiliar gray ceiling. One minute later, a faint beeping noise went off in his head that slowly increased in volume.
After the beeping stared to get decently loud, he made sure to speak in a clear and articulate voice.
"Alarm off".
The beeping noise stopped in his head. His first few experiments with the alarm were very unsuccessful. The alarm didn't pick up his voice command and the ringing wouldn't stop (and kept on increasing in volume) in his head until he manually slammed the off button on the alarm. After that incident he immediately set a threshold on the alarm volume.
J.P. was always busy tinkering with his magix chip. It generally was not advised to do that, but he always disregarded the warnings. His most recent experiment was doing a simple Publish-subscribe message system between his alarm and his magix chip. Getting the subscriber to work on his magix was an extremely difficult task, and it took him a couple of years to get the simple one he had set up now.
J.P. got himself up from bed and grabbed a lab notebook and pen off of his desk. He flipped to a new page and began jotting down some notes.
Alarm continues to function properly. Melatonin control valves increased by .00005 mm from the previous night. According to calculations should be two more days until the control valves reach the desired value. Going to bed has been easier. When waking up I feel refreshed.
He closed the lab notebook and placed it inside his backpack, that was already packed from the night before.
J.P. took his time putting on his clothes and looking at the mirror. After he was satisfied he tidied up his bed. Slinging his backpack onto one shoulder, he double checked he had his room keys and then headed out to his first day of classes.
OOC: I'm going to post more about class once I get a better idea of how this works.. Do we all have the same class? Or different classes based on what we're interested in?

Andrew worked his way through Highcastle and found a seat near the back of Technology Development where he hoped he might not be noticed. What the hell is Technology Development anyway? After all, the online pamphlets were sort of vague. Well, whatever it was, McClary figured he might not be able to figure it out today anyway, since he could hardly focus on anything without any sleep, and he'd barely touched the breakfast he had bought at the cafeteria earlier that day.
