Welcome, friends, to Housetrapped, an RP of the webcomic Homestuck. Much like the comic itself, this will be an incredibly experimental RP. If you're really not cool with that, please don't join. If you don't mind seeing where this ride takes you, I encourage you to go for it.
There's a few different ways we can go into this. Option 1: You don't read the comic, and I explain the key concepts. I'm perfectly okay with this, and if you do it this way, you'll probably enjoy the game more, although if you decide to read the comic afterward some of it may end up being spoiled for you. Not all, but some.
Option 2: You read the comic before the RP. The upside of this is that you understand what's going on. The downside is that the comic is REALLY FUCKING LONG (in the thousands of pages), and you'll see what's coming in the game from a mile away.
Option 3: You read the comic as we go. The big issue here is that there's not really any way of knowing when to start and when to stop, and again, there's a lot of it to go through. Not only that, but it's really complicated stuff. Also, the comic is still updating, and it moves at a pretty blistering pace.
I leave it up to you, but if you plan on reading the comic beforehand, please let me know. I'll have to make sure to factor it into my plans.
Before we really get going, there's a few things you should know.
1: This thing is going to go off the rails in some spectacular ways, hopefully. This is a good thing. I'm not planning on this being a heavily plot-driven RP, so feel free to take off on wild-ass tangents. If you get too far off, I'll pull you back on track.
2: This is going to get complicated real fast, especially in regards to time and when people are doing things. I'm going to lay it out clearly right now: don't worry if your timeline doesn't match up with other players. If one character has done three hours worth of things in the time it took you to do one, that's fine. Keep posting what you're doing, you'll catch up eventually, and maybe at some point you'll be in the future relative to them. Again, if you get too far off the timeline (say, days or so), I'm more than willing to help you get caught up.
3: This game is going to require some amount of time investment. Not terribly much, but if you can manage an hour or so a week, that'd be great. I am available for literally half the week, so any time from Wednesday afternoon to Sunday night (GMT-5, for time) is good with me.
4: On a related note, I'm capping the number of characters at eight. Any more and this is going to get too crazy for me to keep track of. I'd also really like to keep an even number of characters. If you can't keep playing your character (lack of time, loss of interest, or other reasons), Let me know. I'll try to find somebody who might be interested in playing your character. If nobody is available, another player will take over. I'd really like to be able to keep the same characters all the way through. The nature of this game will make it very hard to swap characters in and out. I may or may not be allowing multiple characters per player, depending on how much interest there is, but the limit is eight.
5: This is NOT a terribly serious RP. Serious things can happen, yes, but overall this is going to be a fairly lighthearted affair. The very premise of the comic's world demands it, really. I mean, we've got blatantly game-like things like inventory systems and equippable items, and the fourth wall is subject to some fairly heavy abuse. It's hard to be too serious with things like that going on.
Moving on to character creation.
So what's your name?
Gender? (We still need one of each to balance out)
How old are you? 13 (note that I've filled this in for you. Leave it like that. Also note that just because your character is physically 13 years old doesn't mean that they necessarily have to act like it. The age is mostly a thematic thing; most of the characters act like they're about five or six years older anyway)
So what do you look like, anyway? (I'm not looking for a novel, here. Basically, I want hair, eye color [feel free to pick any color you want, there's no limit], facial accessories, what shirt they're wearing, if they wear pants or shorts or skirts or what have you, and footwear. That's basically it. I'm not looking for anything more detailed than this, people)
Who is that person you live with? (who do they live with? Who is the person that cares for them? Also, note that I'm only looking for a singular guardian, for reasons that will become clear later on. Also, none of your characters have siblings. Laying that rule out right now.)
So is there somebody or something close to you that isn't alive any more? (make up a dead family member, or a pet, or maybe just that crow you accidentally speared with a katana a few hours ago. This will also be clearer later on. EDIT TO ADD: If it's somebody or something emotionally close, there should be a memorial of some sort, even if it's just a picture over the fireplace. If it's just the crow out in your back yard, don't worry about it.)
Hey, what kind of person are you? (general personality at the beginning of the game. Again, I'm not looking for a whole lot, although this should be a little longer than physical description. Also, feel free to be a little ridiculous with this. The main characters are your typical everykid who lives in a typical everyhouse on the typical everywestcoast with his typical everydad; an occult-loving, knitting, sarcastic, wannabe psychologist who is constantly locked in passive-aggressive oneupsmanship with her mother in their not-quite-a-mansion somewhere in New York; a spacy, silly, generally strange girl who lives on a deserted volcanic island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean in a crazy future-tower with her grandfather and dog; and a white, Texas-based rapping irony-loving hipster-ninja whose [also ninja] brother makes a living filming [IRONIC] puppet porn. You can hardly do weirder.)
So what kind of things are you into? (general interests. Doesn't have to be in-depth, just give me 4-7 things your character is interested in)
*What's your house like? (again, we have your typical two-story everyhouse, a not-quite-a-mansion, a crazy future-tower, and the entire top floor of an apartment complex. This will also be important later)
*Uh-huh. And where do you live? (Anywhere in the world. Just pick a place, maybe give the time zone [GMT +-, if you please], and you're set.)
You've got some musical talent. What do you use to make music? (pick an instrument. Main characters play piano, violin, electric bass, and sound-sampler/turntables. If you can use it to make music, it's open to you. I'm not honestly sure if this is relevant or not at this point, so I'm playing it safe and having you pick one.)
That's a crazy inventory system you've got there. How do you use it? (Every character in this 'verse carries all of their equipment around in an abstract inventory-space called a SYLLADEX. Every character also has a way of accessing what they want from said inventory by using something called a FETCH MODUS. Three characters use programming data structures [queue/stack/array {he upgrades}, tree, and hashmap] and one uses various board games [Memory {match the cards that have the item you want}, Jenga {pull the three blocks that correspond to your item} and Pictionary {draw something to CAPTCHALOGUE it, draw something again to access it, and sometimes it can't understand what you're trying to draw so you get a ghost image of something completely random instead}]. Go ahead and be creative with this one.)
You probably don't ever have to use it, but it's good to have it available just in case. What do you have allocated to your STRIFE SPECIBUS? (your character's weapon type of choice. I don't need to know that your sword is a precious family heirloom, or that your rifle is a WWI vintage model, I just need to know what kind of weapon you use. Examples: hammerkind, needlekind [knitting needles, no less], bladekind, 1/2bladekind, riflekind, sicklekind, canekind, lancekind, bowkind, 1/2bowkind, 2x3dentkind , and the list goes on and on.)
*Hey, Light or Dark? (just pick one. Going for a 50-50 split on this one, too. I'm still looking for one of each.)
Here's where the really experimental stuff comes into play. Unlike most games, this one won't be entirely forum-based. In fact, most conversations between players will (ideally) take place over a chat client like AIM or MSN. Maybe even a great deal of the actual action, too. It might end up being that the actual forum thread will just be a Cliff's Notes version of what goes on in chat.
To that end, I'll need you to pick a username, called a chumhandle from this point. Your text color should end up being the same color as your character's eyes, hence why I'm letting you go wild on your eye color. You'll also need to come up with a consistent "typing style" for your character. I won't ask you to try to post that here, just keep it in mind. So without further ado. . .
What is your chumhandle? (Probably oughta have something to do with your character interests. It should follow the case-format of the examples: ghostyTrickster, ectoBiologist, tentacleTherapist, turntechGodhead, gardenGnostic, twinArmageddons, and so forth. First word is lowercase, second word is capitalized.)
Would you prefer AIM, MSN, or other? If other, please specify. We've decided on MSN. Please make sure you have a username.
Most of the plot and character development will take place in chats. Unlike most RPs, I'm going to explicitly ask you guys to dick around, spend a lot of time messaging each other as your characters. I'll say it again, this is not a heavily plot-driven RP. That's not to say that there won't be a plot, but this is a game where I'm much more interested in building a story rather than telling one. And the best way to build a story is, in my opinion, to build the characters.
It would be best to log most of your conversations between characters. Once you've finished a log, one of you will post it up on tinypaste.com, and when it becomes relevant in the main thread, make sure to include a link to said conversation.
There's also a certain format I'd like posts to be made in. Unlike the typical "X did this, and then he did this, and he said 'blah'", or "*x does something* then speaks", I'd like it to be like the format of the comic, which I have posted a sample of below.
> John: Examine room
Your name is JOHN. As was previously mentioned it is your BIRTHDAY. A number of CAKES are scattered about your room. You have a variety of INTERESTS. You have a passion for REALLY TERRIBLE MOVIES. You like to program computers but you are NOT VERY GOOD AT IT. You have a fondness for PARANORMAL LORE, and are an aspiring AMATEUR MAGICIAN. You also like to play GAMES sometimes.
What will you do?
> John: Quickly retrieve arms from drawer
Your ARMS are in your MAGIC CHEST!
> Remove CAKE from MAGIC CHEST.
Out of sympathy for John's perceived lack of arms, you pick up the CAKE for him and put it on his BED.
> John: Quickly retrieve arms from MAGIC CHEST.
You retrieve your FAKE ARMS from the chest. You use these for HILARIOUS ANTICS.
You CAPTCHALOGUE them in your SYLLADEX. You have no idea what that actually means though.
Something like that.
And after that massive, massive beast of an intro post, we're done. I'll probably be posting a discussion thread if there seems to be interest in this game, where I'll be posting things like key terms, short synopses of what's gone on so far, and we can all discuss what direction we're going in and any issues that might come up.
EDIT: To make it easier on anyone else who signs up, here's the raw code for the character sheet. Apologies to the rest of you, it didn't occur to me to do this until right now.
